Did it help caching? Should I turn faster or slower?

Unless googlebot is causing problems on your server leave the setting how it is and let google decide how fast it goes.

Turning it faster will NOT cause google to index more pages per month in total, nor more often.... you need more inbound links for that to happen.

You don't need to change anything in Webmaster Tools unless you are having any issues with your Host.
Its automatically setup by Google according to Site Quality and it really does not have any connection with SEO.

However, if your website have achieved a trust with Google, you will see that Google sets high crawling rate for your website. Hence, try to build unique website which at last is built for User and Google Bot will automatically give you rewards :)

I do setup the crawl rate via my sitemap.xml file for my site update daily. You could setup different crawl rate for different level of catalogs on your sites. :)

    Have a nice day,
