Under the watchful eye of law enforcement in 40 states, Craigslist pledged Thursday to crack down on ads for prostitution on its Web sites. As part of Craigslist's agreement with attorneys general around the country, anyone who posts an "erotic services" ad will be required to provide a working phone number and pay a fee with a valid credit card. The Web site will provide that information to law enforcement if subpoenaed. Jim Buckmaster, Craigslist's chief executive, said the deal will allow legitimate escort services to continue advertising, while providing a strong disincentive to companies that are conducting illegal business. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27575624/
They've got a real problem as well with Nigerian fraudsters in their lettings sections... http://chicaneryconsscams.blogspot.com/2008_01_27_archive.html
About time Craigslist does something about this. Their website has been getting trashier and trashier.
I cant belive they were allowed to have a section called "Erotic Services" ... They created a category on their site for prostitutes. Maybe they should just charging a posting fee in that section.... That would only generate real actual profitable prostitues to list.
Yeah, if you check the las vegas adult craigslist section you will see (im not sure now) tons of $75/hr $100/hr whores. But the "legit" escort's cost around $800+/hr , and they also have to have special sheriff cards, business license and other things. So yay cheap whores will be gone off of CL, just the high priced ones left. HA
Like economists are always saying, there is no transaction in a free market (like craigslist) where both parties aren't satisfied, otherwise, they wouldn't have made the deal. I've always been for allowing people to do whatever they want. Prostitution shouldn't be illegal in the first place. And I've seen both male and female prostitution ads up on craigslist.
I never even checked that section that's to bad that Craigslist is getting so trashy at least they are trying to fix it. It seems all sites get trashed after a few years. Myspace is going down the tube then it will be face book next but soon a new one will start.
No issue with anything that protects and legitimises prostitutes - they are people remember not just 'whores'. My issue is that craiglist is basically just a spamfest and I cant really see what the hell anyone would bother using it for.
