CPM ads question

One of my sites is being bombed by CPM ads. Although I am honored that someone is targeting my site to show his ads, I am also worried about my earnings going down.

So, if you are showing CPM ads, you get paid for every impression, right? And what if a visitor clicks on the ads? Are you also paid for that click? So you would be earning double?

Read through the Adsense FAQ but couldn't find anything about this

Although I am not sure about your answer, but I believe you don't have to worry, as Adsense will automatically select the best performance ads for your site, of course, based on google's own calculation. So I believe if the cpm ads will not increase your earning, it won't be shown.

But my real question is if you get paid per impression and per click also

If a visitor clicks on a CPM ad, you get no $. But you can use the other 2 ad units for pay per click ads.

Can you use the block filter as well - to dump the CPM ads if you're worried about them?

Yeah, didn't think about the filter... but I feel bad about filtering out an advertiser that is actually interested in advertising on my site

I'll let the ads run for today and see how my earnings end up.

That's true - but I'd happily do it if I thought it wasn't in keeping with the rest of the site - I see people may be doing this as a cheaper way of getting ads out there.

If your site is within a popular industry, chances are that there are 100s of other sites and the advertiser might have clicked the checkbox to target all sites, rather than screening each manually while creating the adwords campaign.

Also, I dont think that there is a way to tell - by looking at the ad - if it's a CPM ad or not.

Yeah, I've had adverts on a few of my site from someone sending a low value cpm which has actually ended up earning me less on the occasionall high CTR day because I amn't getting paid for clicks.

I've been toying with the idea of using css to put a first adblock loaded in the code placed at the bottom of the page but I've been trying to stick to only using one adsense block on any one page..

If it's a text based CPM ad it will have a larger font.

Fryman, just to confirm you don't get a second payment when someone clicks on a CPM ad. You get the same payout per thousand impressions regardless of the CTR.

so you are saying .... every adsense generated graphical banner which does NOT have the "Ads by Google" under it is automatically a CPC ad?

All animated graphic ads do not have "Ads by Google" on them. But some larger font ads could be optimized ad units, not just CPM ads.
