You can have high load averages and low CPU usage. They measure different things. Load average is the number of processing waiting in the queue. The more processes waiting the higher the load. You can have a CPU at less than 100% utilization but due to programming and queue management have a large number of processing in the queue.

Ideally, you want to keep CPU usage below 100% and your load average < 2x the number of processors.

I prefer to use a tool called sysstat at the command line as it will give you more details on how the cpu is spending its time and how much memory your are using.

On a shared hosting server, I think anything over 10 can cause slowdowns. But that's the webhost's responsibility: to ensure that load doesn't go that high and whenever it does, is brought down to normal as quickly as possible. That's what determines how good of a host your host really is.

Err....if the server has 8 CPU's then a load of 8 would mean its using 50% resources no?

If the load was 16 then it would be 100%.

One time my server load went to 720!
Someone was executing a script and I deleted his account as soon as I noticed this.

Now my server stays below 1.00 most of the time. But it goes to 2-4 when the backups are being created.

    Server Load 13.24 (1 cpu)

My website is not displayed instantly but I think it's bearable...

My loads have usually been around 2-4.

To be honest, my forum seems slow at times.

it could be the forum itself i suppose.

First whas my server good but now when i go http://www.peterdirectory.com/ and whant to change a page he is slow i think and i have a fast internet con thats is 20 mb so i think people that have very internet con can wait 4 a few min :(
and another qustion if say the server load is
Server Load 15.71 (8 cpus) the cpu proceesors are 2.6 ghz and the server load stay this all the time
and a visoter come on mijn webiste wil the server load than be
    15.72 (8 cpus)
    or
    16.71 (8 cpus)

or is it like this 8 cpu x 2.6 ghz = 20.8 so he can have up to 20.8 queue .
and 0.1 ghz stands fore 1 visitor (example loading a website) ???
