My host uses Cpanel and they have a service to stop spam. It is really expensive. Does anybody know a free way to set up a spam filter? Thanks.

    Hi.

    1. You can check if SpamAssasin is available in your cPanel. Or that is an expensive service you have mentioned?

    2. If you are unable to use server-side spam filter then you can try to search for the free spam filter for your mail client (enter something like "free spam filter" in search engine and check the results).

    do you have WHM?
you can config there as well.

who's your host? because hosting companies that have cpanel have antispam config enabled via their whm (basic one at least).

My host is HostMonster.com. I do have Spam Assassin and just enabled it. Thanks for the help. The expensive one was Postini. They push Postini and I never noticed Spam Assassin was an option. What is WHM?

WHM = Web Host Manager. It's a part of cPanel package, but for reseller, not for end-user

    Adcents,

WHM is a WebHost Manager and it should be available for you with reseller account, VPS/VDS or dedicated server, in case of using cpanel. And WHM should not be available for you with shared (but not reseller) hosting account.

Most hosts that sport cPanel/WHM should have SpamAssasin & Box Trapper, you can even configure additional rules/options too. These should be offered to you for free though.
