Just a quick question for anyone not residing in the U.S.:

Which domain name extension is more popular where you live?

The one assigned to your nation or the .com?

    Also, how about type ins?

If you have something like onlinemarketing.com and onlinemarketing.co.uk
what do you think would be the percentage rate of type ins from the UK?

if anyone has some studies to show that would be great

I feel that .com gives the site a world-wide impression, and the .co.uk or whatever give it more of a local-oriented site.

But I live in the US.. so of course I prefer .com ;)

That makes sense. I want some of the Euro-members (whenever they will wake up) to let us know if there is any benefit in getting a country specific tld over the .com (such as national pride reputation etc.)

country specific? definately not,, .com rules !

no1...buy the .com even if the .co.uk is taken
no2...buy the .co.uk if its available
no3...buy the .co.uk only if the .com is taken already, and you want that risk.

    :)

co.uk is really cheap these days...

I tend to get both if they are available, and if they aren't, i'll go for whatever...

For a UK based aff site, I'd use a .uk extension.

In my experience the country specific domains is the preferred choice. But it really depends on what the site is about. I have 3 .no domains, and at least in Norway people tend to think that if a Norwegian site can't even afford a .no domain, it can't be very serious. It's the same thing with the .pl domain we have. We are concidered more serious when we use country specific.

The point that was made about if .com seems more global is not true at least in Norway. People there know how cheap a .com domain is - AND that anyone can grab a .com domain.

I am norwegian myself, but live in Poland.

I think the most important point here is if you plan to sell something at the site or not. If yes - I would go for country specific. If no - it really does not matter much.

I go with S.M and SE

I buy .com and then country specific. Although where possible I like to take both, domains are the cheapest part of web design these days.
If you are targeting UK, then take the .co.uk - it makes people feel like you are def. here and not a US based site.

If the site is in a specific language then be sure to get:
    Germany - .de
    France - .fr
    UK - .co.uk
    .se, .ch, .dk etc..

I dont waste my time with .me,.biz, .info, .org.uk, .net.uk

    I've got a whole bunch of .info's..

I don't use them, but they cost nothing so I'm not bothered either way :)

    .com for international marketing
    .co.uk for UK marketing

For a serious site, ensure you have at least both, plus .net and .org if possible to avoid squatting, and also buy up mis-spellings in your most common domain formats.

Wow, takes 7 replies for the answer to show up :)

Of course it depends. It ENTIRELY depends on what you want with the site.

We only do .co.uk's obviously because we only ship within the UK (bit of EU). I don't even want to think about all the yanks enquiring about dollar conversions if we had our shop on .com's.

Well I prefer the country specific domains such as .com.au, it makes the site feel more safer to me.
