In my experience, it's been better to let Google "find" me through backlinks, rather than by submitting my URL.

What if you don't have any back links? The quickest more reliable, bar none, way of getting your site into a search engine (including google) is to tell them you have a web site. The add URL form is there for a reason. It works, and it is the first thing I do when submitting any new site.

Best way to do it actually is to get a backlink from a blog. Even your own.

I agree with some of the posts here that having it listed on a decent whois service helps.

I have put Cape Postal Stamps up less than 6 weeks ago. Was indexed by Google the first day I got a link from my blog and by MSN and Yahoo within a day or two after that.

It got listed in DMOZ after about three weeks (although the listing still does not show in Google). Up to now Google indexed the most pages followed up by Yahoo and MSN. I am not a SEO or a GURU. I have followed common sense and took the best advice from this forum. I concentrated on good and exclusive content, getting backlinks from websites in my neighbourhood - irrespective of PR ranking - and now the website is No.1 on SERPS for all three engines for my search terms.

The DMOZ listing resulted in about 3-5 links being added daily without me having to put any effort (mostly DMOZ mirrors-although I got one or two others).
