Could soccer games settle world conflicts?

A few years ago, Matias Margulis came up with an idea: why not resolve international disputes through soccer instead of warfare?

It seemed like a logical, if somewhat naïve, question so the McMaster political science student trucked himself off to the 2006 World Cup to drum up support. Wandering around Germany dressed in a pink track suit complete with pink headband, `70s rock-star hairstyle and moustache, Margulis gathered more than 2,000 signatures on a petition calling on the United Nations to mediate disputes through soccer.

The story of that somewhat wacky quest was recorded, shot by passersby for the most part, and the resulting DVD has landed at three film festivals, including the CommffestCommunity Film Festival in Toronto.

It's low-budget (as in zero) filmmaking that takes on a Michael Moore flavour when Margulis manages to corner FIFA president Sepp Blatter, outgoing UN chairman Kofi Annan and film director Spike Lee, all of whom support his cause.

If nothing else, the DVD champions the indomitable spirit of a man with an idea.

I wouldn't say all the world conflicts but I believe the games would bring people closer together.
