Sun just announced that they are laying off 6,000 employees, which is pretty bad news for the company - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27716152. What's scary about this is that if someone else did decide to buy SUN, they would then own MySQL. If say Dell or HP bought them, there's probably not a good chance that they want anything to do with Solaris or MySQL at least from an ownership perspective. The scary outlook would be them auctioning off MySQL and Solaris and I would bet that Oracle, IBM, or even Microsoft would be first on the list of buyers. None of those companies like open source, and none of them like free. SUN bought MySQL for about $1B, and while the code may be open source, the company and name certainly aren't. This could well be the beginning of the end for MySQL as we know it. Probably nothing to get too worried about yet, but if we see another computer manufacturer making a move for them, it may be time to make a move ourselves.
