Could a virus destroy Google or Linux?

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by anthonycea, Jul 23, 2004.

The war is on, you know the one between Google and M$, now M$ says that viruses could destroy Linux and maybe even shutdown Google.

This is so much fun, I am sure that the Zealots on both sides will love reading the following article and discussing it here also will be a blast.

Have fun, be fair, be objective.

NIce Find Anthony. Man, media attention can do wonders for anyone, even if it is BAD press...

I don't personally care what anyone says about any software I use. As long as I find it easy to use and compatable with my needs, then I will be happy.

Wonder if a virus Could bring down google though. It does seem somewhat unlikely really.

Ah well, we will wait and see.

Yes a virus could bring down google. But not likely from the inside, Linux file permisions do not allow viruses to do anything.

However a DOS attact from virus infected M$ machines could bring down anyone.

Agreed, the main reason Windows is plagued with viruses is because of how Microsoft designed the authentication system at the system level.

This post applies the same way to Linux as it does to Mac OS X. The main worry would be someone with root access installing something malicious (trojan horse).

I've not heard of any... only trojan horses, which require a privileged user to specifically install it. Who/where did you hear that?

You must place Linux in the search box when you get to the above page.

I'm not going to go sifting through search results to try to figure out what specific page you are talking about. You can search for car and get lots of results. It doesn't mean there are viruses spreading via people's cars simply because you get results from a search.

When I put "linux" in the search box on the page linked it showed hundreds of linux viruses.

I tried to send you the direct link, but they take you to a defult search page and will not let you have the same result page from the link.

Well Shawn, since Google runs on a Linux platform, it must be some kind of Linux virus, we can not blame Bill Gates for everything, can we?
