Could a page of your site getting big on digg be devastating?

What i'm trying to know is, could it flood your site and cause it to shut down?

Yes, if you don't have enough RAM, or bandwidth for that matter.

Digg is good for about 10K uniques in the first 24 hours although 90% comes in the first 2 hours or so.

My guess is you could survive 3 slashdots and 6 diggs in one month.

Wow if you hit the front page you get atleast 10k visitors all at once can mean some serious damage. I wonder if someone could sue digg?

1 digg = no worries. Remember I said you could survive 4 farks, I meant slashdots and 1 slashdot = 10 diggs. That is monthly bandwidth wise you coukd survive.

If you have little traffic to start with and the first hour of Digg causes problems then it's time to get a new host.

The first hour of slashdot really puts your host to the test and many do not make it.

Personally, I think even if getting on the front page of digg brings your servers down, it's worth it. You'll probably get a lot of natural backlinks from it.

I had a lot of traffic and had my servers shut down for a while (costing me $$$).

I have finally found a host to handle massive traffic. (I host a lot of images and thus a ton of bandwith)

If anyone needs a recommendation for a host that can handle 500gigs bandwith transfer+ a month let me know. I think I use 600+ with no problems.

It is in the $35-$50 range/month (obviously, unlimited domains on that account)

The nerds reported it to get it off the main page. Some people can be complete assholes.
