A week ago I came across a certain domain that I really liked. I didn't have any money in my paypal account so I couldn't purchase it right away. One of the things I did was constantly check if it was still available, a day later turns out they moved it to the premium domains. Does the .tv registrar follow which domains get searched for and more them to premium domains then? I thought it was very unfair and it had me pissed off for a really long time. Has anybody had similar experiences?
That's Demand Media for you! Which site were you using to check the name, were you using Enom??? I've heard people have the same experince as you, it's a real shame that they do this
A lot of sites.. started out with namecheap, after that the link on www.tv. I believe the www.tv domain has something to do with Enom. I find it extremely unfair.. instead of just paying 25$ for a .tv they're asking 1000$ per year. I hope for them nobody buys it..
I had a similar experience, i had been watching a domain that was going through the expiry process, i missed buying the domain name by 2 minutes. I eventually purchased it through sedo after negotiation with the seller. In hindsight i would not have checked it so often, as I'm sure it was being monitored somehow.
I had this happen to me just this last week. I checked some names I was interested in on Enom.tv a few times throughout the evening whilst waiting for a sale to go through to top up my Paypal. One particular name I checked a number of times just to make sure it was still available. The next day when I had the funds available in my Paypal account I went back to reg'd the domain and to my astonishment it was now a Premium @ $1750/yr!!! Ouch!!
Why would you keep checking the same name a number of times during thenight to see if it's still avaiable? If it was available one, must have meant it still is. By doing that it trigger them to raise it to premium status.
That's true but for me it was the first time to register a .tv. I was so excited that the domain name was still available I had to check over and over again to see if it was still available. I'm sure many people do that..
Sorry for bumping this thread but this whole thing got me thinking. Is it possible that if you buy a .tv domain for the normal price the renewal price is a lot more expensive? If they're already moving good domains to the premium list why wouldn't they with websites with potential?
Put me on this list. I checked a .com domain just 3 days ago and literally pulled my credit card out yesterday to buy it, but it is now suddenly $700. I'm pretty sure there is some kind of sniffing program that tracks what people are searching for on Godaddy, and posts the results.
Of course it's possible. Magazine publishers can raise their subscription rates if they want to, although it can piss off some subscribers if not notified about it.
Well it would be okay if all .tv prices were to go up but could they also move a registered domain into the premium category when its time for renewal?
I suggest you read your provider's contract and ask them questions. You will likely get most, if not, all your answers there.
Search a domain name only when you are ready to buy it because I guess the domain registrars record all search result and might show that domain name in additional names available for sale or for any other purpose by blocking a good domain name.
It happened to me about 5 times now. All 5 names I wanted to register were registered after checking it a couple of times. One of the names however were dropped (NFL related domain) because it was probably not performing well in terms of revenue. I would love to register those domains myself but unfortunately someone was monitoring my search and registered it themselves. Don't check your domain at Name c h e a p dot com until you're ready to purchase it because if you believe that your domain is premium or its got potential so will the domain tasters. We do all the work and they take all the prize. Very Lame.
