Keyword Density = (Number of words * Number of times/Total words)*100

This is the keyword density calculator.

    keyword density should be 1-3%.

Leave the meta tags while doing keyword density.

For your top target keywords, your keyword density should be between 2-4%. If it goes much higher than that, it looks like you're keyword stuffing, and neither the search engines nor your readers will appreciate it! For other keywords that aren't quite as important, the keyword density can be a bit lower.

There is no "one way" to calculate keyword density. The different search engines and different tools on the web calculate them very differently. The keyword density within a post or article is very different than the keyword density within the HTML source for the page.

For example, some tools and search engines throw out stop words (of the and but) and others don't. Some engines may look at the density within the entire HTML documument or the entire <body> of the HTML document. Others may look at the density within the <body> of the HTML excluding the templated portion of the <body> (header, navigation, footer, etc.). Others may include keywords text that is visible on the page including occurences within attributes like title= and others may exclue certain non-visible attributes.

You shouldn't worry about density. It is a VERY minor ranking factor at best. Similar to the meta keywords element, it "used" to carry a lot of weight but because of abuse by blackhats and wannabe SEOs, it's weight in the overall ranking algorithms at most engines (including Google) have been reduced to almost nothing. Write your content for users... Don't think about density. Make it sound natural. If you do this you'll likely end up with a 1-2% density.

Where you "should" worry about densities is within the HTML elements which are looked at individually as ranking factors like <title>, <h1>, <h2>s, anchor text for links. In these individual elements/ranking factors, keyword density can actually make a noticable difference to rankings. A <title> element value of "Mortgage Calculator" will help a page rank higher for the search phrase "mortgage calcuator than would a <title> element value of "Use our Mortgage Calculator to figure out your house payment" or "Mortgage Calculator - Home Loan Calculator - Mortgage Payment Calculator". The difference is because of density.

Increasing the density of the phrase "mortgage calculator" in the actual content portion of the page from 2% to 5% will likely make absolutely NO noticeable difference in your URLs rankings and only serve to cheapen the content. 5% density means you're repeating the same word every 20th word. That is going to read like total crap... spam. Even if it did increase your rankings slightly (which it will likely not), if someone clicks on a link in the SERPs and lands on a page with 5% keyword density, they'll likely immediately hit the back button because they will know the content of page is spammy.

Write good content to keep people interested and on your site. Don't worry about the density within that content. Worry more about making it interesting & informative with good grammer.

Are you targeting a long tailed keyword? Long tailed keyword, especially those with more than 5 separate words, should have a lower keyword density. It is very annoying to see the phrase "How to get my ex boyfriend back" repeated so many times in the website. I think 2% or less is better.

About 5%~7% is good for the keywords you want to focus on. Keyword density does play a role in SEO.
If you use Google Webmaster Tool. On dashboard, you can see the keywords Google Bot "see" on your site and how Significance that keyword is. It "tells" Google what type of site you are running.

You can try the Keyword Density Tools that I made on my site: http://www.web-directory-plus.com/Seo/keyword-density

The formula that I used is based on classic MySQL's full text formula to calculate keyword relevance. For sure different search engine uses different formula. But for reference, it should be good enough :)

More info on MySQL full text formula if you interested: http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/MySQL_Internals_Algorithms#Full-text_Search
