Hi i was wondering if there is a core 2 duo server running at 3.0ghz does that mean each core has 3ghz and a total of 6ghz of processing power? or is it just 3ghz total?

Theoretically you could compare the speed of a processor with two cores at 3 ghz with a single core processor running at 6 ghz. But in reality this is not possible. It depends on the software and on the problem to solve, the ability to run rocesses in parallel. If the problem cannot be split into parallel processes which is mostly the case the second core will not help to increase the speed of processing this single problem. So for single large problems which cannot be split a single cpu with more ghz might perform better.
On the other hand if you have many different processes, which are more or less independent from each other, the dual core system performs better.

Linux takes advantage of multiple cores

Windows does take advantage but uses secondary cores to think about big problems or problems that can handle multiple processors.

Really, we are far far away from 6ghz cores ;)
