Hi, Having spent sometime researching a product keyword niche, I found a really good one and rushed off to register the domain. We'll call the product 'blubber' and the company that produces it 'fred'. Now if I register the site 'fredblubber.com' am I opening myself up to a good kicking by some lawyers. I'm guessing I am, as it looks as if the site is published by the manufacturer .. I'm right in this thinking? In order not to fall foul of the law I'm guessing I need to add 'reviews' or 'hq' or '101' to the domain name? Thanks in advance
Myself I would stay far away from TM issues. You can register it and have no problems. Or it can start to get traffic and the TM owner can come along and just take it from you. Be prepared to spend money on legal costs. Some win, some do not. Not a place I would put myself unless you have money to burn.
Thanks for the reply, I though as much - but I thought I'd ask just to confirm my suspicions. I kind of knew the domain name was to good to be true. The product I want to promote is rather new and hopefully up and coming, so I guess I should be promoting the product via a more general domain name related to the type / use of the product rather than naming the product and company directly. I understand that I can have a "general-site.com/fredblubber.htm" page with out risking the law? Thanks
You can work in the grey area just like using black hat seo. You might get away with it or have countless hours of work go down the tube. When I first started I registered a name with Google in it. Of course I thought I had found the mother load. lol I no longer have it. Got rid of it after I learned about TM. There is several sites where you can check for TM issues.
