Copying Competitors Inbound Links? Good Strategy or No?

Would it be wise to simply copy my competitors site's inbound links, and just "one-up" them by adding more inbound links than they have? I realize there are other factors to SEO, but I feel my on-page SEO is fairly good..

    Thanks

    I mean -- could I do a

    links:competitorssitehere.com

Then submit to the same directories + additional directories to get a higher rank?

You can, however it won’t have any major effect unless your competitor depends solely on the links from directories. Also another thing to remember while submitting to directories is if your site’s pr isn’t as high as his, you would be ranked much deeper down in the listings.

Ps. Use yahoo for getting a better result in finding links.

This can help any site, afterall if you do what they did plus do your own thing, then your likely to be in a better position in the long run.

Agreed, one of the main ways to combat a competitors higher rank than you is to obtain the same backlinks and aquire more than they have. This doesn't mean they won't still out rank you, your talking about off-page optimization and not including the on-page factor.
