Excuse me for being stupid but how do you keep checking what the average score is for the cool site of the day?

I don't know. All I see is the score for the day after voting. I don't know where to go to see the current score.

I think if you get a good score you would appear in their top sites which would be a permanent backlink and extra residual traffic.

 

Well whatever happens you'll definitey get a PR4 link. PR6 for the current month... not that I would base much value of the readings which are shown by the toolbar.
