Just saw this New tool (New for me atleast)., Now you can request google to consider as both of your domain.com and www.domain.com points to the same site., Preferred domain If www.domain.com and domain.com point to the same site, you can tell us here how you want URLs to display in our index. a)Display URLs as www.domain.com (for both www.domain.com and domain.com) b)Display URLs as domain.com (for both www.domain.com and domain.com) c) Don't set an association. You can now select the option and instruct the bot to consider both domain.com and www.domain.com points to the same site , which will avoid duplication problems
it all depends on how your internal linking structure is., and also how you build your inbound links.,
For an established site you want to check and see which version has the most links and presenence. Here's a tool to do just that. http://oy-oy.eu/site/www-or-not/
I don't think that thing in the google webmasters tool will actually work. It's much safer to just redirect the url ( www or non-www ) with less relevancy.
This is real new too me, but maybe too late. In the doubt of deciding for www or not, I'm thinking of redirecting both traffic to a brand new domain
I have seen that option for a while now. The new options that I have noticed in the last week are: Enhanced Image Search and Crawl rate
Whilst on the subject ... how best to redirect? I have just noticed a really irriatating problem on one of my sites... the header links are pointing to www.xxxx.com but after loading, the page is xxx.com. I have a feeling its something to do with me using the map area link. Thanks for any help in advance. Matt
xenyo, I'm not sure what site you are referring to but in checking out http://www.carsdbs.com/ I noticed that the link in the image (top left) points to http://www.carsdbs.com/index.php not http://www.carsdbs.com/ You've got page rank on both pages, so you may want to 1) remove any links pointing to the index.php and only point to "/" 2) 301 the index.php to "/" and hopefully consolidate some PR and link juice.
Thanks alot John, actually I wasnt referring to Cars.. I need a redirect for that cos even my http://carsdbs.com has PR for some reason. I will send you a PM if I could so I dont hijack this thread. Much Appreciated , Matt
