Cookie Duration - how difficult is it for merchants to extend them (technically

I promote a programme but am frustrated with just a 7 day cookie duration as I feel that this will lose me legitimate referrals. Speaking to my account manager he has told me that it is difficult to extend this period and that this policy applies to all their partners. The merchant involved is quite big in the industry I work in....

But how difficult is this technically? Because for me 'difficult to implement' and 'not wanting to do it' are very much different things. Would it be possible for the merchant to extend the cookie period for just referrals originating from my link? [i.e. other partners would have the 7 day cookie duration but mine would have say a 2 month duration]

Guys I would appreciate a reply on this - you technies are more able to assist me to clarify this point:

technically is it difficult for a merchant to programme this functionality extending the cookie duration? And also as I said the merchant usually uses cookies of just 7 days - would it be possible (technically) for the merchant to arrange to extend the cookie duration for just visitors who click on my customised unique affiliate link?

My fear is that this is a big player in the field and you know how merchants of this kind can be....(inflexible, and in some instances may include some clauses in their agreement which are unfavourable to the small affiliate)
