Ok, well I have been doing affiliate marketing for about 4 years. I am just now starting to get referral under my account. I thought I would start with my close friends and explain to them how I make money with them. All of them are aware that I do this, and make money from it, however they are SURE that is is illegal. I really don't know what more to show them... I have showed them my accounts, the checks I get in the mail, my PayPal account balance, and still they think it is illegal. The response I usually get from the is "if you make this kind of money, why isen't everyone doing it". What should I tell them..Sometimes I even demonstrate how some easy zip-code submt offers work. I email them the offer like I would anyone else, and they fill it out, and I show them how it is instantly tracked. What else can I show them?
Tell them you are one of a few who is making "this kind of money", and say "I wonder if this is why you keep thinking it's illegal. That's a shame, because you could be making this kind of money, too....quite ligitimately!" That ought to make them stand up, take notice, and maybe begin to view affiliate marketing a bit diferently. Jim
With all due respect, f'em. Who cares if they think it is real or not. You know the saying...you can lead a horse to water....
I have found the same thing. Sometime i try to tell friend/family what ive been doing and they say "oh another one of your scams" I dont show them cheques or bank account like Russ said with the horse thing
I agree with Russ as well. There are too many willing noobs out there looking for help. Don't waste time with people you have to drag kicking & screaming...
this also goes with adsense (and the like), or even making any business online. I have told all my friends more than one way to actually make a living online, and yet...none of them even take what I say seriously. They are interested in the idea of making money, but are too lazy to actually do anything. So its better just leave them to do what they want to earn money. Sometimes us internet marketers get excited and want to show or tell people, and we forget that not everyone is genuinely interested in doing it for a living. Tell someone "make a website, and make money" and you will either get interest, or a "thats stupid, i cant money off of a website" I gotten to the point when someone asks me what I do, I tell them im just a designer, and if someone hears about what I do, I tell them that people making money online is a hoax.
There is some quote about a man having a hard time being successful in his home town or something. Some people cannot even see what's plainly in front of their faces. That's because they are not actually looking. Frustrating, but there's that other old saw about the when the student is ready the teacher will arrive. Don't get hung up on any one person. In fact tell them that you have decided not to talk to them about it any more, in a nice way. Next thing you will be flooded with inquiries.
That's really good advice, people love a mystery, I bet they won't leave you alone after you say you aren't telling them anymore. I had a similar problem getting my Father to believe in what I did for a living-It wasn't until I sat him in front of the computer and showed him the big name companies with affiliate schemes-ebay, amazon etc that he started to believe me. I guess he thought that such big companies wouldn't be involved with illegal or suspect stuff. Worked for me, may be useful for you.
I guess I need some new friends too, because my friend's reactions are exactly like the ones described in this thread. "Pfft... you're lying man." Or my favourite, "Is that illegal?" I've decided to stop talking to them all together when it comes to business. It's just way too frusterating.
nearly EVERYONE from my friends or from my family thinks that all this pictures from checks and things like that are fakes. they think that it is all fraud .. i could go crazy
When you buy your first mansion tell them they don't have to knock when they visit, instead they just have to pretend their way into the foyer. I mean it's all fake, right?
So the price of making money on the net is that you don't get the same respect and approval from your peers as you would if you were making money offline? hmm..
