OK, often times when you're closest to the situation you miss what is right in front of you. I've got two sites where I need to convert our members to paying subscribers. Does anyone here have success in this area.

I have done some research but as I said often times you need a new set of eyes on the situation to clarify things.

    Stats:
First Site -- Templates for Open Source CMS -- want to expand the network to other CMS's like Mambo/Joomla, OSCommerce etc.
    10,000 basic members
1,500 average unique visitors every day
8,500 average page views every day

Turning less than 1% of the visitors into paying members in my mind is a doable thing I just need some help/direction on how to make it happen.

Thanks in advance for any help/feedback.

Ive found the most succesful way is to make all purchases small, so the users get the feeling them are spending small amounts of money each time.

So for example, have a credits system, each credit is say $0.10
You get the user to make a minimum purchase of $5, they are happy because they still have the money. Then start charging them credits for certain things, they wont think twice because its only $0.10 right? Wrong...they will quickly spend all the $5.

Depends on the website obviously...it might not work on your site.

    Hope it helps :)

Special benefits for premium membership that go above and beyond expanded services work rather well. Access to improved search functions, special forums, free gifts hand delivered and dipped in gold.

If your site does not have a large userbase to begin with, you may be able to get away with decreasing the services available to non-paid members, but if your existing memberbase is too large, you risk alienating them.
