Hi, I would like to convert some of my icon files to other images format but couldn't find a free editor for this.. I have tried Photoshop but it couldn't open .ico files.. Is there any other ways to convert .ico to other images without a paid icon editor? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
.ico files you can't open in photoshop. To convert .ico files to required format follow these steps; (1) Navigate to your .ico file. (2) Right click on the .ico file and select open with option and open the file with Internet Explorer. (3) With .ico file opened in IE condition press "Print Screen" button on your keyboard. (4) Go to photoshop. Open a New Document and press Ctrl+C to paste the Internet Explorer (with .ico file Image) on to the new document in photoshop. (5) Crop all unwanted area around the image and save it in required format. There may be an easy way of doing it but normally I follow this procedure if any file not getting opened in photoshop.
Hi Smyrl, Its nothing to do with the favicon for my site.. I have some icons from a friend and I only want to convert those into other format (preferably in 32 / 48 or greater pixels).
Oops. You might look into buying an old copy of Ulead PhotoImpact on e-bay. I bought a version 7 copy for BIN .99 cents there. It will open ico files. There may well be some freeware that will get the job done but I do not know what will and what won't. Hopefully someone will post another alternative. ----------- Try microsoft paint. I was able to open a favicon with it.
Irfanview, www.irfanview.com You can convert regular icons to favicons, favicons to png or windows icons, png graphics to psd, jpg, gif, tub, pcx, bmp, etc. etc. You can also manipulate images, make basic effects, modify color depth, rotate, crop, increase/decrease size, apply filters, and even add text. A small freeware program with many plugins, serving also for flash and multimedia formats.
Cool In fact there is a site where people can download older versions of Irfanview and other software. "Because newer is not always better", they say. Newer Irfanview is perfect for image manipulation, specially with plugins enhancing its functionality. However, for those who need very basic functions, Irfan's earlier versions are available here: www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=irfanview
You can also try a program called AveIconifier. For more info: http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1774
