I have a auto/home insurance quoting software that is made for your desktop or on the software companies login website. What I want to do is reverse engineer or do whatever is needed so the customers who visit my site can use it for themselves. What is involved in doing a project like this. Where can I find someone to do this for me? How much would something like this cost?
Like the answer to most of life's questions--it depends. It really is a matter of how complex your software is and what resources it connects to. If your program pulls data from some big database that is constantly update (i.e. rates), then for your new program to work it would have to have the ability to connect to that database as well. There's no software that can suck in a file, examine what it does and convert it to a web program, so this thing would have to be built from the ground up. To get a coder I would suggest craigslist.com or rentacoder.com or contact me.
It is honestly scary hiring a coder when you have no idea if they are actually capable of building something like this without major bugs. The basic concept is "customer goes to my website and fills out info for quote, that info is sent to 5 other insurance companies websites and it gets the quotes from those websites and returns that info to my site. Almost all insurance sites provides quote for their insurance online. I just want to be able to give 5 at one time." Let me know what you think.
Pretty much anything can be done. But to talk costs and time you'd need to show the application to a coder and tell him exactly what you want. Your question was simply to vague. If you are looking for a quote you need to start a serious discussion with a programmer or a software company. You can send me some details (either here or my company's website - you'll find it in my signature) and I'll give you an estimation of how many coders I need, time and price.
With more specifics it does become clearer and what you want done is not too complicated. I have done projects similar to this. I would be happy to show you a screenshot of the web page I did similar to this and provide a quote for completing your project as well.
