I want to get a dedicated server soon. I want to know what control panels you guys recommend. I am not worried about price as much as performance.

For 'nix servers, cPanel is well known, well supported, and pretty powerful. Some people prefer Plesk but I'll stick with cPanel unless forced to switch for some reason.

I have heard complaints against cpanel's performance. If plesk has better performance, I might go with that.

What complaints have you heard about cPanel?

I heard cpanel is a resource hog. My resources are limited, so I cannot afford to waste them.

If you do not want to tweak your servers settings at all then I would go with plesk. If you want to change anything in the config files that are not supported by the control panel then go with cpanel.

I hate plesk because it will overwrite any changes I've done manually. To properly optimize a server you have to go in and tweak the settings by hand. Cpanel allows this while Plesk does not.

Personally I choose no control panel anymore; but this is not a good option for most people around here.

I haven't found that to be true. It may be that Plesk is leaner - I'be never done a comparison so I have no idea.

DirectAdmin ftw. It beats cPanel hands down IMO.

And yet you're advertising cPanel v11 in your signature?

I have gone with cPanel against my better judgment. Now I have to find a way to optimize my server.

@minstrel : He's doing that as customers generally look for cPanel.
If it's for personal use he should have gone for DA. Myself use DA for my proxy hosting servers and VPS.

@muffinsincream : Plesk = never, cPanel = what people take, DA = for performance, control, more for personal use. People still think control panel=cPanel...what a shame!

I already have cPanel now, so I'm stuck with it. Personally though, I think I made a mistake. I could have gotten either double the ram or cPanel for free. I chose to cPanel.
