Previously, article submission has become a relentless task done to gain a link or two on a whole range of article directories available on the net; just for that one worthless link as an author of that article. Webmasters need to move forward and use search engines to their utmost advantage and concentrate on contextual linking. Contextual linking is what it sounds like; a link in context of information in a paragraph. This will help search engines identify the keywords and terms related to your website, and will help you gain a better and higher search position. There are certain article directories that concentrate on this, such as Article Source. They want you to submit contextual links, and not just bombard them with rubbish and stick an author's name at the end with a nice little link.

This is what linking should all be about now. Relavance. It's a major term in search results, and it's what you as a site owner needs with your links; relavance to the topic of your website.

When you submit articles to a directory it does not really help you in terms of link popularity and page rank.

I use articles exchange instead. You select a relevant website and exchange with a webmaster's articles. This works much better.

You can use articles-exchange.com for this purpose.
They still have some free accounts available
