I would like to suggest that some 'Generic Rules' are put in place for the Contests section. Today I noticed the following thread: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1930510 Now this is not the first time I have seen this happen. Just because a user did not like what he got from all the entries, he did not select a winner. With any competition, there is/should always be a winner, that is the idea of running a competition. Users invest alot of time and effort in such tings as creating a design or logo. So anyway my suggestion is that there should be a rule for that section that if a Competition is posted, as long as it receives at least 1 entry, then the OP is obliged to select a winner.
I've suggested improvements for the contests section a few times, I dont think it's going to happen. Don't agree with this - anyone can go and make an entry in MS Paint and make them pay. Then moderators would then have to get into the messy and involving business of deciding whether an entry is legitimate etc..
Ive not chosen a winner in a couple of contest threads in the past , And to be quite honest i dont see why anyone would expect to win if all entries were total shit that a 2 year old with a crayon could do better with. unfortunately if you were to bring in rules that a winner must be taken then there should be a set of rules or regulations of which the contestants should have to be approved at a certain level of skill. There are alot of people here that really genuinely do believe that their work is good ,when actually its fookin terrible ! Fact is i could see that section being closed all together before those type of rules come in because it would take too much moderating imo
The contests section is one of the most popular subforums in BST, but it's just been left to work itself out and from that there have evolved a set of unwritten rules which people are just expected to follow. I think that there should be a form (similar to Sites auctions) with options such as contest length, prize, and a garuanteed checkbox. There could also be a button to quickly view past threads in the contests forum from the OP, to see their history in that section. Right now the DigitalPoint contest section is the only active 'cheap' contest website - it fits nicely underneath high-budget websites like 99designs, and there's no fee to participate.
