Hi I have a question regarding contests on DP. If I open a contest for someone to do me a logo/header and I state exactly what I want. Purely for example - I want a tree and a bird and these words. One the contest has finished and I have chosen and paid the winner do I own full copyright to the logo/header? I'm sure I do but just want to double check. Thanks Dee
Hi Dee2007 The logo/header is your idea, we are the designers, so yes, you own full copyrights to that logo as it is a one of a kind design for you.
You don't have the full rights, you have the half rights of the idea...the implementation is the designers half rights... To get the full rights, you have to state upfront. When it comes to hire a person to do a job for you. you tell him from the start that you want to have the full rights over his design...When you have the full rights the designer cannot display it on his/her portfolio. when it comes to contests, the contest holder should state upfront that the designers won't be displaying the logo/graphic/design to their portfolio...or else the designer will be displaying it. Eventhough they CANNOT use the design and sell it to someone else. Hope i made sense what i'm trying to say.
You will have whatever rights you negotiate for. You need to specify in your contest rules what rights you intend to keep from the winner you pay. If you do not say anything, the contest winner would by default retain some rights.
