obviously someone that is specialized is going to be better at their job, though it is not necessary, right now I run 14 different sites by myself all on different subjects. But yes, ultimately that approach is harder.

content is king indeed and link is the queen but if you can write yourself quality content that brings traffic to your site or better converts them into potentioal if ya lazy you can just spin other contents and use them for yourself.
I think the best thing to do is to outsource your article writing, not unless you're running your own personal blog.
You can do it yourself but be prepared to do the work. Do the research, study top ranking sites that are similar to your field, and write even better content than they have. If you have the time to invest, then you can be your own content writer. Some webmasters lack the drive to do this, but many don't. That's why they hire content writers.
