okay so what would the best start be? building content and then what to do?

Yeah, build your content and pages with basic SEO in mind - the most popular searched for terms in your titles and scattered about the page in a readable way.

Once you have some content, start getting back-links with the correct anchor text pointing back to the page with the keywords your targetting.

Ie. The page with 'Supermans Underpants' and articles on Supermans Underpants would have back-links with the text Supermans Underpants in them, and if those back-links are from pages which are also about Supermans Underpants, all the better.

You can write articles and submit them to article banks like Ezine Articles and place your website in SEO friendly directories using your popular keywords for the title ie. Supermans Underpants Information.

It's best if your URL also has the most popular keywords: http://www.supermansunderpants.com, so that any links you gain naturally or from your articles are certain to have the words in the link.

There's tons of old messages in this forum to help, though.

dont forget as well that any keywords with trafic over say 2000 a month are also good as you will have less competition for them.

Try and find a balance of 50-50 that way you will get traffic at the start to give you a lift.

if you just target words like webhosting server ect you will have competition from sites with backlinks of 500,000 +

I would go the 50-50 route and do as goodad says and submit to article banks.

There are lots of tricks and tweeks you can do,some get posted on this forum and some like one of mine we keep to ourselves.

okay so, find a 50/50 like:

not really much searched keyword, but not really much advertised keyword either right? Well how much are a lot of searches, and how much would a lot of advertised keywords/searched keywords be?

 

I think you may be getting confused as you are talking about keywords and also adwords that will show on your site ?

 

as an example of keyword text in your sig you have the word "webdesign" now you have no space in it so the stats for searches per month are:
203 webdesigns
90 inc webdesigns
42 custom webdesigns
25 best webdesigns
25 free webdesigns

but if you search for web designs the stats are:

2637742 web design and development
879971 custom web design
590838 web design
520412 web design und entwicklung
331606 web site design
148711 web design og utvikling
120976 web design e sviluppo
119972 web page design

so your backlink keyword gets about 500 searches a month so i would change it.

web design gets 590838 so i would look for a keyword that is 50% down the list as your second wave of keywords.

Looking at the related searches for my new website (see sig) I noticed one of the phrases gets searched for a lot, yet has very little competition:

"ovulation calendar"
75185 searches
246,000 search results
