Content in the footer of web page

I want to place some content in the footer section of my web page but am not sure if this is a good idea from a web design point of view.
The footer seems to be mostly used for copyright notices, extra navigation, maybe a few links, rather than for content.
Will the search engines consider that the content in a footer isn't very important because it's been placed there instead of in the main content section of the web page?
If the word footer is a problem I can change it to something else in the html on the web page and in my style sheet.

Does the searech engine understand footer ? and that its not important.
Content is content. Put it in footer if you want. There are pages ranking high in search engines whose only content is the keywords repeated thousand of times in the footer invisible to human(same font color as background).

You should really insert links to your other web pages to allow spiders to access them and to provide an alternative to your navigation.
