We are developing a travel site. There will be cities and towns. Each city will have as content: -google map -photos from flickr -article about the city from free article site -user generated content (not in all places). Before any user publish anything about the city, only first things will be there. Can be those copied articles a problem from SEO point of view?
You should always cite your source. If you do, there should not be a problem with SEO if you do good SEO optimizing. The duplicate content is more myth than facts. Not citing the source may cause legal problems so be sure to give credit where it is due. you would also do much better by trying to get original well written articles.

If most of the content of your site is duplicate stuff, don't expect much traffic from Google. From what I've read, it sounds like yet another "me too" spammy site that offers nothing unique. No offense.

As much as possible, write unique contents for they are more seo-friendly. Avoid posting duplicate articles.

Try to write unique and different contents which are not copied from anywhere else... Due to the duplicate contents the page rank goes.

you build a site composed of duplicate content, don't expect any search engine to pay much attention. Ask yourself this - if YOU were a search engine, would YOU favor such a site over more important sites (like er.. ezinearticles) who also host the same article???
I would be very glad if anybody can explain me how is about duplicate: Can duplicate on pages become a problem of all site (also a problem of page with unique content on the same site) or only of page with duplicate or only of page with duplicate but also with some extra unique content together with duplicate content? If most of your content is duplicate, the whole site will be penalized. As it should, since it indicates the site has no real value.
