Content Filled sites - HTML or CMS

Whats your preference and what works?

I'd believe a CMS like phpnuke or Joomla would not be so great for search engine optimization, with all that junk code. Yet its so simple to work with.

With HTML you can customize every aspect of each line. What do you guys prefer?

I really tried to switch to a CMS. (plone, in my case)

I just couldn't give up the little extra touches of total control that hand coding HTML gives me.

It depends on what you're able to do. If you have little or no experience creating the code yourself, a fully developed CMS as the obvious choice. On the other hand, if you know how to do it, I'd always create it myself, as I'd like to know exactly how everything works.

You should really try and see what fits you well. There are feature rich CMS (open source) available but you may feel loosing control while using them, few examples are mambo/joomla

I use both for some of my sites, but still like wordpress. Wordpress is nice for your large content and you can use template to apply on it. Not much fuss.

    Wordpress is KING!

    Most of the time anyway.

Nothing like good old hand coding. Can take a little extra time though. Your sites can easily be done in wordpress will.

    True!

However Wordpress is not ultimate, it still extremely defficient about SEO. Default installation doesn't even have the meta keywords and description tag for pages. I am really trying hard to get the wordpress making effective for SEO (well just for my site) using all the plug-ins etc (its pain to search through so many plugins to see what fits best)

As per as SEO is concerned, I would give ALL my marks to mambo/joomla (you still need to use a free/commercial add-on to get elegent urls)

I have an entry in my personal blog about this Mambo and Joomla are Best in SEO ( I am not great writer/blogger, its more of short notes from my own experiences)

Wordpress is easy to tweak. Plus it doesn't have all kinds of ugly tables like mambo. Your meta tag problem you mention in your article is easy to fix.

again, it ads to flexibility of wordpress. But as default there are always some basic things which I feel needs to be present.

Even if its easy to tweak, finding right plug-in is not easy....one has to go through them all, compare and then apply. Its tedious at times.

Mambo tables - hmmm, thats nothing to do with SEO, which we are discussing here :)

That's the best thing about wordpress. It requires changes to work optimally that the average person cannot make.

Imagine if everyone had a perfect out of the box completely search optimized wordpress. Then the need for these forums would no longer exist and you would need to take some other angle to get an edge.

I cannot say much about PHP Nuke, but Joomla is great for SEO

Lets give you an example. JoomlaResource.com get about 1 - 1.5K daily hits from Google alone.

My resource site has some of the best rankings for search terms used by any joomla developer and user.

    joomla components
    joomla modules
    joomla resources

So if your looking for ease of use with mod_rewrite etc

then Joomla should be your cup of tea
    :)

Joomla is identical to Mambo am i Correct?

Anways I use Joomla and it does very nice, especially with the simplicity of using some of the Mod_rewrite tools.

yepp, joomla is similar to mambo. Few months back joomla was created out of mambo after spat between founders ( I guess).

There is no need to settle for a second rate CMS. CMS does not mean bad code, a CMS can have excellent code, look at wordpress. If you wish, you could code your own CMS, all the features and 100% control.
