Can I just offer everyone some advice here. I would imagine most people here have sites for business, and I would hope my advice is wasted. However consider it.

I cannot stand finding a website, then having to HUNT for a contact us link/page/phone number.

Every business site I run I put the phone number on every page. Even if you're running a forum site or a non profit ensure you've got some way of your visitors contacting you.

I've found a couple of sites I'd love to advertise on and buy/swap text links. But my problem is there is no way to contact the site owners. I'm emailing the address on the whois lookup but no reply.

You've built a site, well done.
You've got it in google, great.
But your visitor has a question, ensure they can get hold of you!

Good advice is often the simplist :). It doesn't take much effort to have a simple contact form, missing an important message can be costly (not that you'd ever know you had missed it).

I have dicovered the same thing 2 years ago...and after that...phones start ringing...tel no. is must have on every page

but there is even a upgrade of that...
using the picutre "live help" "call 4 free advice"
with office numbers and worknig hours with a picture of a woman holidng a telephone...

that even works better than just a phone No...
but basically it is a sme thing

You're most definitely right - hell, I have got legitimate advertising proposals through the contact form (and a few spam messages, but that's OK).

As a side note - its always worth having a link in the place people expect a link. Myself, when I want to contact a site, I go straight to the bottom of the page to look for the link. Its a habit I suppose. :D

There are many examples where people dont want lots of calls. It is dependent on how busy the site is, what it offers and how it generates revenue etc.. Imagine there was a KWT + Coop number you could call for support. It wouldn't be practical.

No sure, you're right. But some sites I can't find *any* way to contact the site owner! No email address, nothing.
