Considering starting a web directory. Advice?

I've never run a web directory before..

Is there any directory software that will get my site up and running fast? I found the site: http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/. This looks like a good product, but has anyone else tried it?

If I decide to start the directory, how can I go about getting the first submissions to it? I imagine, that after I get it started, it will be fairly easy for me to get new submissions, but at the beginning it may be difficult.

    Any advice is appreciated?

phpLD is arguably the most popular software for setting up a new web directory, largely because of the amount of templates and mods which are available for it.

There are others, but as a newbie I would say to stick with phpLD as it is easy for beginners to use and get into the industry.

As for getting submissions... when you get your directory up and running go and post about it in the Solicitations sub forum here at DP. Make sure you add it to the lists as Directory Critic and Vilesilencer.

Depending on the type of directory you intend to run... if you decide to offer a free directory, doing just those three things above will get you hundreds of submissions daily. If you decide to go paid you might get a couple, but you would need to invest in some advertising and promotion to really make it work.

For information on directories there are many articles and blog posts on the directory in my sig. Browse through the blog and search for the term directory in the search function to pull up all the articles on the topic.

I agree with Silky, unless you are a programmer stick with phpLD. Even if you know programmer why re invent the wheel.

Yes you will get many submissions if it is free. Then you will need to scan the websites to see which one's you accept and which one's you reject. Hard work if you ask me.

As for makiing money from the directory I have started a thread where we are discussing that and you can have a look at it.

    Hi,
I started a directory 4 months ago and I'm launching it.

As suggested in the previous posts, it really depends on the type of directory that you are going to create: free or paid? The number of submission can be really really different.

With regards to the decision whether to use an already existingplatform or to develop a site from scratch, personally I decided to go for the second option. Why? because I had in mind something new: as my intention was to stress on differentiation, I developed my own site and I'm quite sure that I reached my goal.

If you are not good in web development, maybe it's better to personalise an existing software. What's really important is that you try to put your effort in making something unique, paying a lot of attention to quality, usability and so on.

    Best regards,
    Rommix
