You seem to be very sophisticated in SEO ( you have 1,658 posts). This question is very general and usually used by newbies...There is nothing new invented in conquering Google algorithm. What's more it's constantly changing. You have to use old methods with some new variations if it's possible...

If the keyword you want to have #1 ranking for is "insurance", about 3 years of solid seo graft, a lot of money, a killer website and a bit of luck.
If it's "tap shoes for a pink tiger" - well, I'll probably get it from this thread in about 15 minutes

If u want to achieve #1 place in google for no search words its easy.Just a few days is needed for it.
But incase of more traffic words u need more work.

there is no magic formula just build backlinks which are do follow via blogging and link exchanging, social bookmarking and submitting to article directories. Also focus on quality AND quantity of content.

I agree with u, just do not look at competition of keywords, find keywords that really drives traffic, some times it is very easy to get higher rankings on billions traffic keywords, and some times it's very hard to achieve rankings on millions competition which has high traffic.

Thats two very broad questions you have asked.

It all comes down to one thing and that is....

    What keyword/s are you targeting?

For example if you try and target the keyword "Hosting", your looking at hundreds of hours of intensive SEO/SEM.

If your targeting "I like to eat bananas", you could be looking at being able to be ranked number 1 in the first week.

I guess the number of posts does not equate to SEO knowledge.....this cracks me up anytime someone asks this......do they thinks its some kind of secret or trick and even if there were, why would anyone share it in an open forum?

Very Good Answer. I think you need to kiss gogle,s a** to be ranked #1 in a high profile keyword. You need links of course.

A Google search box and a youtube video is worth about 10,000 backlinks.

My formula for success with Google tends to revolve around 3 things: Title tag, H1 tag, and of course links. Optimize your your title and H1 tags well, and dedicate A LOT of time (or money) towards getting quality, relevant inbound links for your (or your client's) site. You also want to do the other basic SEO steps (keyword, desc., alt-image, etc.), but those 3 tend to have the most weight, IMHO.

I have noticed most title tags appear to have the search term listed in the title.
