Hello everyone. I am facing problem while editing my wordpress site. Lets say for example I am making a exercise related website. So first: I created categories for the exercises. like: upper body exercises, lower body exercises, and in the upper body category there are sub categories like chest, shoulders, arms, lats etc... and I created posts about them shoulders, chests etc everything on pages. (not posts). I created them on pages because I read somewhere that pages are more SEO friendly. and Im gonna be adding different kind of exercise routines so when people and when people doesnt know about the exercise they can press on the name of the exercise and read about and see about the exercise (example: when someone lower body routine and want to know about squats, they can press on the squat and know about it) The problem is in the when i cant cant attach or parent my exercise pages to the exercises categories. now everything is kind of messy. I cant categorize all these pages and cant see them in the exercises categories. any comment would be appreciated. Thanks P.S. I added those categories to the main menu. so people would find exercises on the menu and menu drops down and people would choose to see certain exercises that they wanna see
Everything is not messy. Period. Read WP ideology. Pages in WP are STATIC ENTITIES. Posts are the articles and stories you add or regular basis. When you add a post with a video you can check its belonging to one or more categories. Categories are not pages or posts. They are for keeping order and classifying your info
That's a lot of categories, but it makes sense and you've handled it quite well in the nav menus. This is where you've gone wrong. They should be posts, not pages. Pages are for static content that does not go into your main site. Stuff like "About us", "Contact" and so on. It's the content that doesn't fit in categories because it's not your site's focus. Posts are things you can categorise so people can find them. (i.e Upper Body Workouts go in "Upper Body" category.) Categories are like labels, which you put on the posts. All the posts appear in the order you put them on the site, unless you choose to view a category, then you just get the ones with that label. It's a sorting mechanism: categories don't exist as content, like posts and pages. If they were posts, all your problems would go away. Basically, everything is fine but you need to make all your exercise entries (your actual content) posts, not pages. Then you can label them with categories and it will all drop beautifully into place and become clear.
thank you a lot sir! Now im very clear about these. sorry for a newbie silly question. thank you for your very detailly well explained reply!
There are no silly questions. Just because something is basic doesn't mean it's easy to understand straight away!
It's ok. I had same confusion when I first tried to get on Joomlas post-pages-categories-positions logic. After Wordpress it looked weird at least And this is definitely the right place to ask
You need to keep in mind that WordPress will try to sort posts based on the date as if you are blogging a daily, or sequential, journal. Pages will be structured in the parent->child->next lower->even lower as you can structure the menu
