so my niche is saturated, and i am trying to look for some keywords to start an SEO job.

here is what i am doing to determine what words/phrases to use to give to the SEO company

Find a keyword in google keyword tool, i make sure match type is set to phrase

i then look through the keywords that show me a relatively good global search volume

i then google the keyword in google.com WITH " " and make sure it doesnt have over 3million search results

    is this right?

Do people actually search for stuff with "keyword" in google

    thanks

    Thats the basics covered.

3 million competitng sites is on the high side.

I tend to look for less than 100000, but thats more for niche marketing.

The reason you use "" is for the phrase.

Phrase checks is important for relevance. People don't type with "" but you use it to find the words in that order.

As a normal search will pull any websites or searches with any combination of those words.

ok i think i understnad but i dont understand using " " when i type the keyword into google

    here is an example -

i type - download music into google and get back say 30,000,000 results for example

now i type - "download music" into google and get back say 10,000,000 results for example

so "download music" obviously has the lesser amount of search results and therefore competition,

    BUT

no is going to type "download music" into googles search bar, most people will just type download music

so why bother checking the keyword with " "

Let me clear this up ;)
When you look at Google Adwords tool for Phrase Match search volume, that's the number of searches in whatever month made using Phrase Match! Many people do use Phrase Match (including me), because it almost always returns exactly what you're looking for.

Phrase match is when you are looking for a specific phrase, so of course people use it - just like the Adwords tool shows. If I want to find a forum about internet marketing, I'm going to search for "internet marketing forum", and only pages with that exact combination of words, in that order will show up. It's much more efficient than any of the other ways of searching (besides using Advanced search, which basically does the same thing).

Naturally, there are fewer pages with that exact phrase in the page. That's why the search results show fewer pages. Search page results have nothing to do with search volume. :)

There are lot's of "download music" sites because there's a lot of money in that industry and it's a fun topic.

    Ah ok cool

So if i tell an SEO company to work on "download music" for example it wont be a waste of money...

its just that the keywords i have found are about 100,000 for the "phrase" category in google keywords and it seems like a high number, i couldnt imagine 100,000 searching for "example keyword" a month,

You should give keywords that is also relevant to the content of your website that matters to you/company on the homepage. You can also consider industry and or competitors keywords that you would like to target as well.

If you are hiring an SEO company surely they should be doing the keyword research and telling you what they advise to rank you for based on their research.

It is what you are paying for after all.

Being inside your business gives you a totally different view to what someone outside of it will think.

    I hope this helps

    Regards

Another good command to analyze whose targeting your keyword is to use the intitle: command.

I always do quote matching...this is how you find untapped Niches...once you find those phrases, check the monthly volume...if low competition/search volume above 40,000 a month, then you have yourself a winning phrase.

Make sure to use a couple keyword tools. This way you see different terms or ways they are listed.

rather than going after hot keywords, you should consider the long tail keywords - not so hot, but still have reasonable traffic

Wow....does it take 40,000 + to be considered a good keyword to go after? I was under the impression that you wanted your keyword search to be atleast 1000 monthly.
