My understanding of Google PR is that google ranks pages by 'popularity'. In essence I think of it like a mob of people holding up an individual (website) on their sholders. The more people supporting the site the higher the PR. However, recently I came across playfuls.com. It seems like a good page and has a high page rank. When a do a link: search in google (to see who's linking to it). I get A LOT of pages within playfuls.com linking to itself. I did not find many other sites (external to playfuls.com) linking to it. I further noticed that html source they seem to use their url in a lot of ALT= and Title=. Could this be part of the strategdy. This confuses me a bit about how page rank works, or maybe I'm just not seeing all the links google picks up. Just wondering. JP.
BIgger and High PR sites will have lot of their own high PR pages linking to themselves. That will show up in link: searches too. But to reach that level, you need tons of external links too. PR still remains what it used to be. Alt, title tags will help in small measures for SRPs. Probably alt tags helps a lot in image searches. PR is not the only factor deciding SERPs, on page optimizations and content helps a lot too. Edit: Do not give too much importance to link: search. Google reports only a small fraction of the backlinks.
link: operator in Google is not accurate.. they don't list down all the backlinks.. You can try this backlink analyzer to see the top ten pages linking to the url: http://www.useseo.com/backlink-analyzer.php
I myself do not understand how Google and PR exactly works. I recently started an IPWhois service, and I get 0-5 unique visitors a day. The site is not advertised and there are no backlinks. From the site itself I only link to one other site. Suddenly I found my site listed tops in Google and the hits are picking up from them. Also the site got a PR4 from 0.
The only thing that affects PR is links....not alt or title tags.........there is not use is putting your website url in your alt and title tags.....you are already going to rank number one if someone searches for your domain name....put a discription of the image that includes on of your keywords....
PR measures the backlinks indexed by Google, but that is not accurate because some datacenters reveal different results
i agree with that. i dont think backlinks alone will decide what PR you got. so just do all SEOs you will be fine.
The Pagerank that you see in the toolbar is only dependent on links...not content.....you can link to a blank .html page and it will have PR...haven't you seen sites that have PR but no content?????? Toolbar Pagerank will not affect your rankings in any way......a pr update happens 3 to 4 times a year...do not wait around for the next update...if you keep building links you should see a rise in rankings and hopefully traffic within a few weeks of link building....
