has anyone got an idea whether a .com 'outweighs' other site registrations? eg: if i own smelly.co.uk and someone else opens smelly.com and they are both well SEO'ed and linked...would the .com come above the .co.uk ? basically I want to get a couple of .co.uk's and i want to know if i need the .com's aswell..or is it not really necessary? GEM
I seriously doubt that a .net vs .com (or .co.uk, etc) would be treated any differently by search engines. Although, I would purchase the .com to keep them out of the hands of your competitors .
If I get a .co.uk, I generally strive to get the .com too, simply on the grounds that people might mistype... if I'm running .co.uk I would probably redirect from .com... that said, most of the .co.uk's I've got, the .com had already gone (I so wanted www.trance-formation.com, but I suspect AC got there first ). I second VS... you just don't want your competitor out smellying you when you could have prevented it. It's the only reason I got hypnosisaudiomp3s.com when I already had hypnosiscds.com
Yeah .. Purchase the .com for competetive reasons ... as for the .com & .co.uk ranking question ... .. I would think a search using a .co.uk version (eg. google.co.uk) would be waited towards .co.uk, even if you just searched the web and NOT .co.uk only .. and that also brings up another point .... you get .co.uk searches only which ofcourse means lower competition and thus a better rank ... so my vote is for .co.uk
