What version of windows? So windows screen pops up and the it freezes or goes black? Do you get a virus on the system before you shut it off? Try loading into safe mode, can you do that?

By checking the system do you mean that it says it is scanning your hard disks? More information on what it exactly says would be helpful because it could determine if maybe your hard drive went bad or if you possibly have a bad virus...

So windows is not even loading? Your bios is loading thou, right? Maybe your partition is bad or maybe its not loading to the C drive.

Checking the system? is the screen blue when its doing this or black?

When it scans the hard disks, does it give you a summary of what it found after it completes, or does it go black? If it gives you a summary, see if it says it found any bad sectors or anything like that. If it just goes black, then maybe your windows is hosed, or your hard drive went bad. I always start with the simple solutions first, even if I don't think it will necessarily solve the problem.

I would personally start by turning off the machine, unplugging power to it, then opening up the case and making sure all your connections are secure, especially the ones to the hard drives.....

So the blue scree where its scanning the disk?
You need to try and load into safe mode

Agreed. Sounds like your system files have been deleted or removed. Viruses do this shit all the time.

If your conections are all good and your hard drive is not bad, try repairing the files with a windows disk. you can do it in dos or safe mode.

OK well GL, Did you try a restore point. If you have a windows disk you can load to it and theres a repair section in it. You can go to windows and print a copy of the comands to repair the system files.

Yea, try the repair options, and if you can't get that to work, I would suggest taking it to someone that is a professional. You probably need an OS reload, or have them run test to see if the drive is bad. Either way, you don't want to lose your data.

Sorry we couldn't be more help!

Boot from your XP CD, go into repair mode, try and get a directory listing (dir command) and also run:
    fixboot
    fixmbr
Also try a "repair install", which is basically installing XP but it keeps your data and settings (though the nature of the install makes it seem as if it were a fresh install!)

You may also want to download a drive fitness tool, search google for one.

Let me know if you have any questions as I have dealt with this 3 times in the last 6 months, twice successfully, gave up the other time.
