Is it better to leave your computer on 24/7, or should you shut it down when not using it, or put it in sleep mode?

If you don't do anything with the computer, then shut it down is the best option. Save on your electricity bill.

It will save your electricity bill to turn it off when you aren't using it. I usually leave it on during the day while I'm at work because I have money in the stock market so when I come home at lunch I can easily check. It will probably help the power supply from NOT leaving it on 24/7 either.

My computer stays on unless I go on vacations. However, it automatically goes into powersaver mode after 15 minutes, so it does not use too much electricity.

I would say its better left on. maybe not for the bills but for the pc it seems to last so much longer if rarely turned off.

Most program leak memory so the only way to recover it (and to prevent the computer from swapping in virtual memory from the slooow HDD) is to shut down every evening and reboot in the morning.

I use the three minutes boot time to drink coffee and to go through my (paper) inbox and recycle some junk mail :)

If you don't do anything with your computer for a longer time (such as night) then better for you to shut it down and restart it early in the morning. Thats what i do daily. It helps to save electricity as well as few updates needs restart your pc which occurs frequently.

I always shut down my pc if I do not intend to use it for an hour or so...

Anything less than that, I put the screen in standby mode...

    Regards,

if your PC is a home server and need to always connected to internet or doing some task, then it's better to left it on. if NOT, shutting it down or hibernate it is the best choice.

i agree with everyone above, saving electricity is the best way to save your own bill.
