Yup it's a RAM problem. XP needs more RAM and graphic applications like Photoshop are RAM hoggers!

The best solution I think is urgrade your RAM. Your processor is amazing and the hard disk size quite bigger. But your computer lack of RAM. For your information, this three stuff is very important to enhance your computer performance.

Put in as much RAM as your computer will hold / your wallet will afford. I wouldn't stop at 512 megs if I didn't have to.

After that, go in and increase the size of your swap file so that it is at least twice the size of your physical RAM.

I used to be an IT Consultant for a company that had a client that had one user that had a lot of the Creative Suite products and would try to run them at once all while pulling large videos and web files across the network. They started with a similar machine on 1 GB of Ram and XP. We upgraded them to 2 GB of ram. I think it was 667Mhz Ram. They still experienced a hang every once in a while but not nearly as often as when they were using 1 GB. The very least amount of Ram you should be using is 1 GB. Also make certain photoshop has all of the latest updates. If you still experience hangs after that, then take it all the way to 2 GB of ram. If you have a dual core processor that will also help, but the Ram is the biggest problem.

Before you make any changes like stated above you also want to make certain you don't have any spyware or viruses on your computer. Also the 1 GB of ram is optional depending on your preferences. I personally hate to wait for my computer to load anything, so I never follow the minimum recommend specs on computers. That is just a ploy to sell you a cheaper computer. 1 GB of Ram is my minimum. If you ever upgrade to a newer OS, then 1 GB definitely won't cut it. You will want 2 GB. So think about how long you are going to have your current computer when choosing your ram setup.

For example if you have only 2 slots in your computer, then I wouldn't waste money on 2 sticks of 512 MB to take you to 1 GB. I would just go ahead and spend a few dollars extra for the 1 GB stick of Ram. There may only be $5 to $10 difference in the price of Ram for 2x512 vs 1x1024. That way if you do decide to take it even further to 2 GB then you only need to purchase another 1 GB stick of Ram. The only possible problem is if your computer requires matching pairs of Ram. If this is the case, you are probably going to have 4 slots anyway and can use the 2x512 option.

If you have further questions or anything, just send me a PM and I will tell you what you need to know. Crucial.com has a very nice tool to tell you exactly what Ram your computer is compatible with.
