Computer Freezes + Graphic Problems

Hello, I have been running a lite version of Windows XP on my computer for over a year now with no problems at all. Normally it is extremely fast since at most I will only be ever using 250MB of my 1GB Ram - it is because of this I don't think my problem is RAM related. Recently my computer has been freezing when I have tried to perform longer operations such as moving a large file or zipping/un-zipping a file, however it also occasionally occurs at random. When this happens the CPU light is on constantly and when I am moving a file I get an error something along this lines of, "the source could not be found". And to add to my misery today my computer decided that it would like to start in low resolution, so I re-installed all the drivers that could possibly have an impact, but it was to no avail. So I assume that this is also a hardware problem, and perhaps the two are related - though I am no computer expert.
Does anyone have some suggestions as to what could be causing these problems?
    Thank you.

P.S. please hurry, I am currently considering throwing it out of the window.

Get what you need off of it and restore it to original factory settings
