Eau Claire (WQOW)- Computer experts say online shoppers could end up with some unwanted gifts this holiday season.

RAM Technology says 80 percent of Internet viruses are unknowingly downloaded by the user.

Here's an example: if you want to buy an iPod for Christmas, you might go to a search engine to start. That search will bring up a number of possible links. Some of those links are probably fake. Computer experts say it's hard to tell until you click on one. The fake site will alert you, saying a virus is being downloaded and to stop the virus, you should click here.

Experts say clicking anything but the red ‘X' to close out the window will download an actual virus.

"Become familiar with your own anti-virus software so that you know what your own anti virus software looks like so that it's a lot harder to fake you out," said Patrick Rogalski, a RAM Technology Computer Technician. "If you get a virus that pops up that's trying to trick you into installing it close the window. Don't click yes; don't click no, close the window.

Technicians also warn online shoppers to only enter personal information, like credit card numbers, on secure web sites they are familiar with.
