There are some great directories that are definitely worth the submission time. Problem is that there are some that don't get around to listing your site. Some are swamped or just don't take the effort to actively add free listings.

I rank the best free web directories on my site. The rankings are based on PR, traffic and the time required to get listed.

Hi all-

This is a great post and pretty interesting and useful for many of us. Suprisingly enough I found a really awesome website of a guy who maintains a bunch of different catagorized lists of directories which he offers free. I kind of selfishly want to keep this one secret but I guess sharing it here will be alright.

SEO Frienly Directories

Now he offers a downloadable excel file with all of the lniks in it and a place to put notes etc as you list your sites. It is really cool I have been using it now for a little while. Not all of the links are 100% good. I have found about four or 5 that either I was too dumb to find where to submit the site or the site has changed.

He lists over 130 something SEO Friendly directories. He states taht they are SEO Friendly becuase the lniks ont he pages are not database driven.

Well, go ahead and take a look at what he has to offer. It is free and I don't even know the guy but super useful!

That excel file is simply beautiful.

 

Just one point to note on the PR. Whilst it can be an indicator of the popularity of the site. Be mindful that unless the directory's links are SEO friendly, then your site will see none of that.

Same goes for keyword anchor text.

It's particularly important in reciprocal directories. If you are linking to them and sending them PR, and their link to you isn't SEO friendly, then you are being deceived.

 

I am not sure if this helps, but I run a few directories for niche industries. Here is a partial list of some of what we run:

We have about 1,200 different directories that you might want to create an account and submit to. I do not think the PR is that high probably around 2 for each of the sites listed.

 

I have a PR4 directory and search engine at http://www.axelis.com that some of you may be aware of. For those of you who are not, check it out. SEO friendly links and fast approval. No money and no recip required, (but don't let that stop you).

 

It has a DMOZ listing and has been iondexed for a while

Gimpsy has removed their option to submit for free. They say it's a temporary change, but it sounds like they are very backlogged.
