I'm new to joomla just have a question is it possible to have components on pages of their own? I have a forum addon installed but it does not fit into my normal content area.

Can I create a page just for the forum?

You should de-assign all modules to the menu item of the forum. Then if your template is written correctly, the forum will stretch on the full width (I think this is what you want?).
You can also use the advanced module manager from nonumber.nl which allows you to assign/de-assign modules on per component basis.
