You can place "banner" ads (images) with Adsense as long as they are not "contextual" banner ads... Read more here: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/can_i_have_adsense_and_other_ads_on_my_site_simultaneously.html
That article is out of date - published in 2006 (dark ages in Google time). Currently you are allowed to use contextual ads along with Adsense ads, as long as they are formatted differently. http://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/answer.py?answer=32849
How to get the most out of your Google ads? The knowledge of how to design AdSense is very important to getting the most out of your ads. With great Google AdSense Ads, you can look forward to getting big pay checks every month. With software that can produce a website within an hour, blogs and already made sites available for sale, almost anyone can own a website nowadays and this is why the study of how to use AdSense properly is so important.
no as much as ad you want to publish on your website can publish, but I am doubtful to the similar to adsense company like adbrite, then adsense would not like adbrite to be published on the same page where adsense is published, I would also like to others view on this.
