you can use Yahoo site explorer to find your competitor's backlinks. you may be able to use this to build backlinks to your site.

strictly for onsite i would try hubspot's website grader and possible seopowerbook's search engine spider test tool.

Well if you are doing your on page optimization you need not worry about backlinks yet. Start with the structure of your website (Head Tags - Title - Description - Keywords) then H1,H2 and so on. Make sure you have quality content that is interesting. Make sure you have a page layout that can easily be read my Google's spiders. (Avoid flash and other languages that makes it hard for Google to read). Then after all of that you can start your off page optimization with backlinks.

First of all, choose relevant and targeted keywords for your website. Then search those keywords on Google & Yahoo. Your competitors will be the ones who are coming on top SERPs on many keywords.

    For example,
If you have 50 keywords and on 30 keywords, 10 websites always comes on top search results, than those sites are your competitors.

    Hope this helps.

First, you’ll need to check out your competitors’ content. Don’t just look for keywords, though those are important. In fact, you’ll need to use those in part to determine who your competitors are.

Put all your keywords into a spreadsheet and add the following information:

    * Google’s daily/monthly estimated reach. Wordtracker has a free keyword suggestion tool that can help you with this.
    * Overall number of results in Google (broad match).
    * The site ranked number one for each term.
    * The number of results when you use the “intitle:” command for that keyword.
    * The number of results when you use the “inanchor:” command for that keyword.
    * The number of results for intitle:”keyword” and inanchor:”keyword.” The sites that come up for this are your direct competition: they are in your field and have engaged in SEO.
