Hi I have a Pr4 blog on a .net domain. There is my competetor who is starting a blog on same niche on the .com domain. I have no idea how this will affect me. Please share any info you know. Thanks.

    Don't worry much about it.
Since the PR is not determined by the .com factor.
You should add more unique content to your site to maintain your PR4 in long run.

This is not a very nice situation, especially so that ".com" is more popular than ".net"

If your niche is profitable, I would keep an eye on this competitor, and I would buy the domain name with ".org", and versions with dashes and underscores, and other variations.

And I would buy the name with ".com" if this chance occurs.
(in other words, I would try to protect my niche in all possible way)

Just keep on working for your website. Even though .com is famous but still when you will search your website is leading than .com site so dont have to worry.

TLD in this case (well in most of cases) doesn't play that big role. What you need to do is continue what you have been doing..(publishing content, getting new fresh authoritative links, etc) and you should be fine, just pay a close attention to your competitors site, check him once a week and see how much link is he building, where he gets the links from...how well is his page(s) optimized and you will have a even better idea of who will remain on top.

I'd say you need to make sure to stay TWO steps ahead of your competitor. You're already one step ahead of him because your site is established. You need to be wise and efficient about your content publishing and SEO for the site. It's easy to get knocked down if you're not watching your back. Obviously, your competitor has been watching you, so it would be best to return the favor, but at the same time, be clever in your doing so. Point is, don't waste time on your competitor. Let THEM continue to waste time on you. If they're truly just doing a copycat move, they won't survive anyway.

Your domain is good enough to go, and you just need to build backlinks and generate traffic. Try press release and linkwheel. The pr is not determine the income of the site

Since you can improve your pr to 4,I think you are good at developing website.Don't worry too much about it.
Just continue to work on it and I think things will still keep good.If necessary, you can do some research on his
website and then make yours niche one more attractive and unique.
