Competing with older domains

There is a competetive keyword with around 26,800,000 in google and i have analysed the top 30sites for keyword and all domains apart from about 3 or 4 are at least 5 years old and I am wondering if its viable for me to do seo for the term

I have a site with a new domain but its a 301 redirect from my older site which i started in Oct 2007 which has over 30 000 backlinks and PR5. My other question is does goes see my new site as new or does it see it as the old redirected site registered in 2007

2nd question: Google sees it as the same site with a 301 redirect - it's like you were living at some address before and you've informed your friends about your new address. When they come to visit you at your new address, they will expect to find you there and not somebody else.

1st question: You can compete if you want to but it will be very difficult - you will need to get the trustrank from google and that can take time and for this competition, you never know when you'll outperform your competitors (if you ever will that is). So best thing to do is target long tail keywords around the main keyword.

My question for you is, why are you changing domains?

If I were in your position I would keep the old site with all the back links, and 301 redirect the new domain name to the old site.

Initially, Google would see the new domain as a new site. Over time it would crawl the old site, pick up on the 301 redirects and then understand the entire old site was moved permanently to the new domain.

That being said, in my opinion, the new site would never have the same exact amount of domain age (trust) as the old site did. (which is one of the reasons why I recommend keeping the old site and redirecting the new domain name - if possible)

Ok the reason i am moving is because the site has revolved and I am kind of moving into a niche rather than on the broad fashion - which is what this site was about.

I think i will concentrate on long tail plus it will convert better than trying to get higly competetive keywords
